Those of you attending Parade know I staffed the Fast Lane Travel booth for our Treffenmeister Peter Sontag, who was busy celebrating his 50th Anniversary of his arrival in the U.S. Peter came to Steubenville, Ohio, on the 4th of July, 1960. After hearing the fireworks on the 4th, he wrote his mother that there were shoot’em-ups going on, just like in the cowboys and Indians western movies! Little did he know then that 50 years later the 5th of July 2010, and every 5th thereafter would be declared the official “Peter M. Sontag Day” in Steubenville.
I really enjoyed meeting many of you at Parade, both alums and hopefully future Treffen members.

“Clear road, let’s go” the walkie-talkie squawked. It was Thomas our lead driver.
The five 997 Carrera 4S’s and our Panamera 4S dutifully accelerated away.
My wife and I were in the back of the group enjoying the leisurely drive through the rolling pasturelands, admiring the light brown cows with their bells. I switched the PDK to “manual” mode. The road we were on went up through the Alps toward Austria and has been used in numerous movie chase scenes, due to its “zig-zag”/ switchbacks pattern.
This was going to be fun.
Beginning with pre-Treffen planning, have you thought about which Porsche you’d like to drive?
Reserving cars is a first-come, first-serve system, so figure out what you’d like, and place your requests early, so hopefully PORSCHE will have a car close to what you’d like. Define a first, second, and third choice. Decide if you’d like a traditional manual, or Porsche’s new PDK transmission.
For a quick lap at the Nürburgring, you’ll probably experience more in seven minutes and six or seven seconds than most people have experienced in all their life in the way of fear, in the way of tension, in the way of animosity towards machinery and to a race track.
- Here’s a short summary of what you might expect and is included in the 4-lap Nordschleife :
- A one-hour Nordschleife classroom training session – very important.
- A training session in the vehicle you choose.
- A professional lead driver in a car in front of you. You are connected with a walkie talkie. You have the option of having him ride with you and instructing you during one or more of your laps. I highly recommend the first lap!
- Special Nordschleife Insurance.
- Gasoline, Tire wear fee and brake pad wear fee. (I’m not kidding).
- Your helmet rental.
The second day includes driver’s training — And as a side note, anyone I ever sent to the Nürburgring indicated that the driver’s training was actually their favorite part!

Fast Lane Travel, Inc. is excited to launch their official “News and Views” along with our honorary contributor, Jim Millick, who always seems to have his finger on the pulse of all things PORSCHE!
A NOTE FROM JIM:
I went on my first Treffen in 2006,. Since then, I’ve peppered your Treffenmeister, Peter Sontag, alsol CEO of Fast Lane Travel with enough intriguing e-mails that he’s asked me to become a regular contributor to the Fast Lane Travel website!
I’ll share the news bits from around the Web that I run across, as well as my advice for those planning their unforgettable trips to Germany. When I’m not out in one of my German cars looking for those rare, twisty and hilly roads in the Midwestern U.S., I’m often found in front of a keyboard, the QWERTY, not Steinway kind, unfortunately.
